The wire diameter of a single link — not the length of the link.
Measuring tip: callipers are best — measure the side of 5 different links and take the average. Old chain can deform slightly, so don't worry if it isn't exact. Our markers are toleranced to fit all DIN766 and ISO4565 calibrated chain. More on measuring →

Fitting
Three movements per marker. One screwdriver. No mess.
No degreasing, no masking, no drying time, no waiting for weather. You can do the whole chain on the pontoon.
Snap two halves off the rack
Break off the two opposite halves and place one either side of the link. One half has a spigot, the other a socket and screw hole.
Press together until aligned
Firm pressure closes the marker around the link. It grips the link itself — it isn't wedged into the gap, which is why it doesn't pop back out.
Drive the stainless screw home
One 316 stainless screw, snug but not over-tightened. Done. And if you want to move it next season, unscrew it and relocate.
Then build the guide plate — in about 30 seconds
Cut the number tabs from the rack, press them flush into one column, and slot the matching colour tabs opposite. Mount it where you can see it when you're dropping.

The questions we get asked most
How do I know what size chain I have?
Chain size refers to the wire diameter — the thickness of the metal a link is made from — not the length of the link. Callipers are the most accurate way: measure the side of five different links (not at a joining link) and take the average.
Old chain can deform slightly under load, so your reading may not be an exact round number. Our markers are toleranced to fit all calibrated chain, including DIN766 and ISO4565, so a marker may sit slightly loose on some chain without affecting how it performs. If you're between sizes, give us a ring and we'll talk it through.
Will the markers pass through my windlass gypsy?
Yes. The markers sit within the profile of the link and customers routinely report the chain running seamlessly through the windlass. That's the core difference from cable ties, which snag and shear, and from push-fit markers, which get pushed back out by the gypsy.
How long do they actually last?
They're designed to last many seasons. We have customers into their third year on the original set, and live-aboards anchoring almost daily for six months who haven't lost one and report the stainless screws still clean. Because they're screwed rather than wedged, there's no mechanism for them to work loose.
Can I take them off or move them?
Yes. Undo the screw and the marker comes off in two halves. You can relocate it, or refit it if you re-chain and want a different sequence.
Why is 13mm and above custom made?
Above 12mm, link widths vary meaningfully between chain manufacturers, so an off-the-shelf marker would fit some chain and not others. From 13mm up we make each set to your chain's measurements. You order online as normal, then we contact you to confirm the dimensions we need before we make anything — so what turns up fits properly.
What's actually in a chain marking kit?
Chain markers in your choice of 4–12 colours (5 or 10 of each — 10 each saves 15%), marine-grade 316 stainless screws plus five spares, a fully customisable guide plate with number tabs in metric or imperial, and illustrated fitting instructions.
How should I space the markers along the chain?
Our suggested sequence: put the anchor indicator about a metre up from the anchor, mark at 5m intervals from 2–20m, then at 10m intervals from 30m upwards, and place the STOP tab near the bitter end so you know to stop paying out.
Colour order we recommend: red, yellow, light blue, white, light green, pink, orange, royal blue, ivory, forest green, magenta, auburn, purple, brown, olive. With 15 colours you can give every position its own colour and skip complex sequences entirely.
